Police motorcycles have been a part of traffic enforcement at the Klamath Falls Police Department since the 1950’s. In those days motorcycle officers wore bus driver type caps and rode Harley Davidson and Indian motorcycles. In the 1980’s officers rode Kawasaki KZ 1000’s, and in the late 1990’s switched back to Harley Davidson motorcycles.
The Klamath Falls Police Department currently uses Harley Davidson Road King motorcycles, which get through traffic congestion and respond to vehicle crashes well. The motorcycles are also used for special events like parades, the 4th of July fireworks and as escorts during special events.
The Klamath Falls Police Department has a traffic team that consists of two motorcycle officers. These officers are tasked with responding to all traffic related calls; including DUII’s, vehicle crashes and traffic complaints. When they are not responding on dispatched calls they are patrolling problem areas to promote safety through compliance and watching for traffic violators.
Two 2008 Honda 650 L dual-purpose motorcycles have recently been added to the motorcycle program. Those motorcycles have red and blue emergency lights, a siren and a wireless push-to-talk communication system. The dual-purpose motorcycles were initially purchased when an increase in incidents was noted on area nature trails. The dual-purpose motorcycles can be used to patrol trails, city streets and also travel to incidents where other vehicles cannot respond.
The Klamath Falls Police Department Traffic Team wishes motorists safe and accident free travels.
